What are parasites?

Intestinal parasites are usually microscopic organisms that invade the gastrointestinal tract in humans where they live alongside a host of other good and bad bacteria and fungi. In medical terms, a parasite is a life form that lives and thrives within the host’s body and does more harm than good to the host, commonly feeding and thriving at the expense of the host.

There are three main classes of parasites that can cause disease in humans: protozoa, helminths, and ectoparasites. Protozoa and helminths largely affect the gut, while ectoparasites include lice and mites that can attach to or burrow into the skin, staying there for long periods of time.

Where do parasites in the body come from?

Many people wonder where they get parasites if they aren’t living in or visited an underdeveloped country, but parasites are easier to ingest or contract than you would think. Most parasites are microscopic in nature however there are some which are large enough to see with the naked eye. There are some 3200 species of parasites, which can be found everywhere in our environment, in the air we breathe, in the water we drink, and in the food we eat. These parasites feed on the nutrients that are meant for us thereby increasing the chances of nutrient deficiencies. At times these parasites can even pose a greater threat to our bodies because many of them carry diseases.

It is estimated that 80% of both adults and children have parasites in their gut. People can be infected with these parasites in several ways. The most common route is through the fecal oral route. This means that feces from the infected person via improperly prepared food, unsafe drinking water and contaminated hands, makes its way to the mouth of another person. This intestinal parasite is ingested until it reaches the gut.

How do I get rid of parasites in my body/gut?

Through our step-by-step program. We never just want to do a simple, quick-fix parasite cleanse like the low-cost ones many promote online, because this does not prepare the body to effectively process the parasites nor structure a healthy internal environment once they are passed. We want to ensure proper drainage pathways are open and organ function is optimized so we aren’t prematurely releasing parasites. This is where we come in with our custom approach and focus on foundational medicine.

Foundational Medicine

Foundational medicine is the missing piece in integrative and functional medicine practices.

As the precursor to functional medicine, foundational medicine begins at the utmost root level. It helps patients return to homeostasis by delivering key nutrients to upregulate mitochondrial function, which is necessary for the proper function of every cell, organ, and tissue.

It also emphasizes the importance of opening up the body’s drainage pathways prior to detoxification, and improving a patient’s internal environment to sustain long-term wellness.

Foundational medicine is the starting point for health, as it allows patients to experience optimal results when they move onto targeted protocols.

Why you shouldn’t wait

Why is it so important to get rid of parasites?

Unexplained constipation, diarrhea, gas, bloating, or nausea can be a sign of parasitic infection. By nature, intestinal parasites take root in your gastrointestinal (GI) tract. They cause your immune system to react, and you will get different symptoms based on the organism.

Many symptoms of indigestion are often confused with IBS (irritable bowel syndrome). Doctors don’t necessarily check patients for these infections as parasitic infections are not very common. At times, the local routine lab tests also do not show anything helpful. Only more sensitive testing like the GI MAP can identify if your unusual gut symptoms are related to the unwanted trespassers.

The toxins released by the intestinal parasites can lead to anxiety. These toxins interact with your neurotransmitters leading to mood swings, nervousness, and grinding of the teeth at night. Parasite infection can cause itching. Some parasites also dig tunnels under your skin and lay eggs in them, which leads to itching. Specific parasites like pinworms can produce localized itching, while they can also cause itching around your anus. As they are recognized as dangerous invaders by the body, the immune system produces Immunoglobulin E (IgE), antibodies that travel to cells and release chemicals, causing an allergic reaction. Another sign of parasite infection is that you will never feel satisfied or full after meals. This feeling is followed by weight loss. On the other hand, nausea and gas are common symptoms that reduce hunger levels.

Many people joke about how they must be having an intestinal parasite if they feel hungry all the time, but this can be a real symptom of parasitic infection. Tapeworms can hatch on your stomach and feed on what you eat, and this means you are always hungry for more. You will not feel satisfied or full even after eating your meals regularly. Parasites can start eating your red blood cells or lead to loss of blood through the stool, which can cause blood loss and result in iron deficiency anemia. Parasites feed on the blood of the host tissue leading to the loss of iron and protein and a deficiency of red blood cells in the body.

These worms feed to survive, and they do it at your expense. Loss of blood can make you feel exhausted as there is not enough blood in the body to support its normal functions. Parasites can invade the joint space and muscles and release inflammatory toxins that affect normal movements and range of motion. You may feel muscular and joint pain if you are suffering from a parasitical infection.

The mechanism behind skin diseases is a bit complex. Intestinal parasites can stimulate the production of immunoglobulin E (IgE), antibodies produced by the immune system. It can then produce allergic reactions in your body, including skin problems that do not seem to have any source.

Parasites are tough on your body. They can lead to feelings of fatigue and exhaustion that result in mood changes, depression, personality shifts, headaches, and memory issues with feelings of apathy. Certain intestinal parasites, like Giardia, can actually cause chronic fatigue syndrome that can lead to deficiencies and malabsorption of essential nutrients like iron and B12 in the body. It can lead to feelings of lethargy and tiredness that have no reason and affect your routine to a great extent.
